Giants of the Earth

Students will learn about the life of Giant Sequoias, John Muir, and the history of Sequoia National Park. They will create their own vision of Giant Sequoias forest from a worm’s eye view (1-point perspective), using the combination of watercolor and acrylic paint.

Art as Rebellion: The Berlin Wall

Students will learn about the history of the Berlin Wall and explore some of the artwork from the current East Side Gallery. They will learn the difference between street art and graffiti, and how street art can be a vibrant form of public expression and commentary on current society, politics or economics. Students will create a minimalist art piece inspired by Berlin Wall artist Thierry Noir using acrylic paint and paint markers and will include a personal statement as part of the finished piece.

Kaleidoscope Corals

Inspired by the vibrant, atmospheric undersea paintings of Yellena James, this project will use a monoprint technique of applying dabs of paint between two plastic transparencies, enough to make two prints. Students will then use mixed media to add lines and texture, shells and sea grasses, to turn blobs of paint into a colorful, kaleidoscopic coral bouquet. Coral reefs are not only beautiful, but they also provide vital support to over 25% of marine life. Climate change and ocean warming have resulted in mass bleaching events, leaving coral reefs critically endangered.
